About The Cy Pres Fund The Lorain County Bar Association approached The Community Foundation of Greater Lorain County in 2005 to establish a permanent resource for local attorneys to direct their charitable giving. The unique partnership resulted in the creation of The Cy Pres Fund. This endowment fund has the distinction of being the first of its type in the United States in that it pairs a local bar association with a community foundation. The Fund furthers the Bar Association’s mission of “enhancing the public perception of the legal profession and institutions.” An annual grant will be made from the Fund. The Cy Pres Committee, comprised of three to five Bar Association members, will select a project to receive the grant. All grant applications will have been thoroughly researched by Community Foundation staff to ensure that the project is of a pressing need and that the agency sponsoring the project is solvent. All grants will be made to nonprofit institutions serving only Lorain County residents. Because it is a permanent endowment, the Cy Pres Fund will forever be awarding grants that will be used to fund programs critical to Lorain County residents. As the Fund grows, so will the benefits to the Lorain County community. Grants Made by The Cy Pres Fund In January 2006 the Cy Pres Fund Advisory Committee was pleased to make its first grant to The Haven Center, a program of Neighborhood House Association of Lorain County. The Haven Center is a homeless shelter that provides counseling, job training, transportation and childcare to its families and can host up to 54 individuals. Since its opening in January 1992, The Haven Center has served between 687 and 890 homeless families each year. The grant from the Cy Pres Fund will enable The Haven Center to continue this much important program for Lorain County’s children and families in need. The 2007 grant from the Fund benefited The Blessing House. The Blessing House opened in April 2005 as a non-denominational faith-based crisis nursery for children, birth through 12 years of age and is licensed to care for 10 children. It is located in Lorain. The purpose of Blessing House is to provide respite for caregivers during a crisis by offering a safe place for caregivers to leave their children, and to function as a safety net to forestall abuse or neglect. Blessing House serves primarily those who live at or near the poverty level and who lack family support and resources. Children may stay up to three days, and up to a maximum of 30 days a year. In its first year of operation, Blessing House cared for 140 children from 71 Lorain and Elyria families. Most of these families are dealing with poverty, isolation, job loss, loss of utilities, domestic violence, homelessness, physical disability and lack of education. Because of the generosity of Lorain County attorneys, these, and other local charitable efforts will forever be supported by the Lorain County Bar Association. About The Lorain County Bar Association The LCBA was established in 1920 as a non-profit corporation with approximately 21 members. The Bar Association now has over 400 members consisting of judges, attorneys and paralegals practicing in and around Lorain County. The attorneys in the Lorain County Bar Association are very active in their community and have long provided public services to the community on their own. They may sit on boards for charitable organizations or they may provide pro bono services to the public. This Fund is the perfect vehicle for the membership to come together as a group to show the citizens of Lorain County that attorneys do care about the community in which they practice.
