This presentation is designed to provide attendees with the knowledge about the origin and purpose of original actions and how they are resolved in the court of appeals.  Article IV, Section 3(B)(1), of the Ohio Constitution provides that courts of appeals have original jurisdiction over five special writs:  Habeas Corpus, Mandamus, Procedendo, Prohibition, and Quo Warranto.  The Ohio Supreme Court also has jurisdiction over these five writs, and, by statute, the Common Pleas Court has concurrent jurisdiction over the writs of Habeas Corpus and Mandamus.

You will learn about these five original actions, including their purposes.  The discussion will include when it would be appropriate to file one of these original actions and when the writ is not available.
